Rachael + Phil’s Wedding in Groby, Leicestershire

Two years ago I took some photographs of a lovely, totally-in-love couple in Queens Park, Loughborough. Last year they told me they were getting married and asked me to be their photographer! I just knew it would be an amazing wedding and below are the photos that tell the story of their fabulous day. The wedding took place in the pretty little village of Groby in Leicestershire where Rachael grew up. The day was full of fun, laughter and happiness with an English Fete held in the gardens of Groby Old Hall complete with Rubber Duck Fishing, Bunting and Lots of Cake!

Oh and look out for a bride on a bouncy castle!!

The fact that the heavens opened just as we started the Bride and Groom photos turned out to be a blessing in disguise as Rachael’s family friends who live in the Old Hall came to the rescue and let us use their beautiful home where we took some stunning photos including one with a guest appearance from their great Dane!  The rain stopped so we did get get a few outside shots too including some with the wedding car – a VW camper van that sported an incredible array of decorations including a bonnet covered in photos of the couple.

The Village Hall had been transformed with bunting the night before and as Rachael and Phil entered everyone jumped up and cheered! Feasting and merriment followed with the first dance being a raucous Barn Dance number which involved a lot of galloping and twirling! Soon everyone had joined in and pretty much didn’t stop!

ruthjoyphotography_R&P_W_002

I completely fell in love with Rachael’s delicate flower crown – yellow and purple and So pretty!

ruthjoyphotography_R&P_W_2014-41ruthjoyphotography_R&P_W_008

Not a faint – hearted lad, Phil decided to have a wet shave on the morning of his wedding – I was glad Dave was photographing this part as I don’t think I could have beared to watch!

Leicester Family Photography with Ruth Joy

Beautiful warm evening sunlight, a BIG pile of logs and a rope swing are the perfect ingredients for a family shoot!

When choosing a location I like to look for places with things to do as not only does climbing on logs, swinging on ropes or simply running down tree lined pathways help the whole family relax it also makes for great photographs! We want our families to have lots of fun and remember their photo shoot as a great day out.  Our focus is on natural photographs that bring out the individual personalities of each member of the family.

We had a lovely time taking these photos whilst on holiday with Dave’s sister Victoria, her husband Paul and children, Iona, Nick and Edward.

Victoria’s Thoughts – Part one

What is your reaction after first seeing  your photos?

I was delighted when I saw our photos, the colours are really beautiful and you’ve captured the personalities of the children so well.

Which are your favourite three photos and why?

I love the one of the kids sitting on the logs, the one of us all sitting on the blanket and the rope swing shots are really fun.  I also love the one of David and I.

What worries did you have before the photo shoot?

I was a little worried that we might be a bit ‘stiff’ but you completely put us at our ease by playing fun games to make everyone relax.

What part of the shoot did you enjoy most

I enjoyed watching Edward posing, he’s a natural and at that age they have no self-consciousness to hold them back!  I’m convinced he’s inherited my Granny’s uncanny ability to always pull the perfect photo face whenever a camera is pointed in his direction!

Victoria’s Thoughts – Part two

How did your children find the shoot?

All the children enjoyed the shoot, even Nick who is going through a bit of an ‘awkward teenager’ phase.  They enjoyed being the centre of attention and showing off their rope swinging/climbing/hammocks/Backstreet Boys dancing!

What was it like having a family photo shoot with Ruth?

The whole experience was very relaxed and fun.  We are extremely pleased with the results.

What advice would you give to a family thinking about having a photo shoot with Ruth?

Go for it!  It’s a lovely way to capture those special childhood moments which don’t last for ever as the kids grow up so quickly.

Leicester Family Photographer travels to Hampshire

The Lowe family were great fun and we had a lovely time together. The girls had both brought their scooters which kept them happy and occupied as we had a walk around a local nature spot and found some great places for photos along the way. As always I had lots of games up my sleeve for the girls to play and the time went by really fast!

Here are the beautiful words I received from the Lowe family after they had first seen their photographs….

Thank you so much for the photos we absolutely love them! They really captured the girls personalities. They are so wonderful we don’t know which ones to pick to print out. I will recommend you to all my friends and family. The photos you take are truly stunning, a perfect keepsake. You don’t just take a picture but add your talented artist flair to the photos which is why they are so amazing.

THE INTERVIEW

What worries did you have before the photo shoot?
My main concern was choosing the right thing to wear and that the girls behaved themselves. As Ruth has photographed our family before I knew that she would be asking us to do some things which might seem strange but when you see the final result you can see why!

Did Ruth give you any advice that helped you before the shoot?
Yes Ruth advised us what to wear and told us to bring some bits for the girls to play with.

What part of the shoot did you enjoy most?
The whole shoot was a lovely experience.

How did your children find the shoot?
I think the girls enjoyed the shoot the most. They had a great morning with Ruth. They really enjoyed the games Ruth encouraged them to play especially Chinese Whispers which they are still playing two weeks later.

What was it like having a family photoshoot with Ruth?
It was lovely. Very natural and not forced.

What advice would you give to a family thinking about having a photoshoot with Ruth
I would advise not to get stressed and worried about the photoshoot. It is a good idea to just go with the flow if it is an outside photoshoot. Who knows what lovely little background you might stumble across whilst exploring. Ruth is very clever as seeing the beauty in the small area that will actually be in the photo.

If you would like a family photo shoot with Ruth get in touch to find out more.

Natalie & Ben | The Interview

ruthjoyphotography_wedding_gallery003How did you two meet?

Leading a midweek group at Open Heaven Church… our group garnished three married couples in total!

Tell us about the proposal:

Ben bought Natalie an iPod that had a box similar in appearance to that of an engagement ring… a year and a half later, he gave her a ring on Albert Bridge in London.

What moment was the highlight of the wedding for you?

Natalie: The confetti throwing – it swirled upwards in a gust of wind, and there was also just SO much of it!

Ben: Turning around to see Natalie walking down the aisle – in that moment the whole wedding crystallised and suddenly felt so much more tangible.

What did you enjoy most about your wedding?

Natalie: The speeches! I really enjoyed giving a speech and having the opportunity to honour Ben in words, and then seeing what the others had to say!

Ben: The decorations and the atmosphere they made. Knowing every last detail and having personally curated most of it, I appreciated every last ounce.

What advice would you give other couples planning a wedding?

Natalie: Pick bridesmaids with character – as they can form a very important, strong, and helpful team!

Ben: Truly design your wedding to feature the characteristics that make you individuals and don’t allow prejudices or tradition to dictate.

Which is your favourite photograph from the day and what does it mean to you?

Natalie: There’s a fair few… but the one of Ben and I embracing at the altar – such a precious and short moment that I cannot believe was caught so well by camera!

Ben: The one of Nat and I standing with Ness who led our service; I love the way Nat’s smiling up at me.

What did you like best about having Ruth and Dave Photograph your wedding?

Natalie: Ruth and Dave made such an effort to get to know us and the people around us in our wedding. It was great to have the engagement shoot, and we felt we could trust Ruth and Dave completely with all photography matters on the day. Ruth is also rather good at calming a bride down pre-ceremony…

Ben: Ruth and Dave are absolutely delightful people who were so kind and accommodating to us both on our wedding day and for our engagement shoot.

We really appreciate these photographs along with the stories of the wedding people have told us. They allow us to see other sides of the wedding that we couldn’t at the time! It was a pleasure to have the engagement shoot, because we had more time and observe Ruth’s approach and witness her passion for photography – which made the wedding photography really something to look forward to! It was great to be able to trust two professionals on the day to record everything – as it’s such a whirlwind of a day when it comes!Ruth and Dave also blend so well with the guests… it’s very natural to have them around as they’re so personable!

THANK YOU !!

A Loughborough Wedding at Open Heaven Church

Natalie and Ben’s service at the St Peter’s Centre, Loughborough, beautifully illustrated how God is central to every aspect of their lives including their marriage.  The service included lots of worship and a time when friends could come up the front and pray for the couple as they began the next stage of their life together.

Creative Retro Wedding

Before the wedding Natalie had told us they were having some big balloons and she wasn’t joking! You will see what I mean later in the blog … BIG !! Lots of fun retro details filled the day including a candy bar complete with peanut butter cups, retro soda pop cans (throwback pepsi & mountain dew) and a fabulous guest book idea where guests could type a message on a beautiful vintage typewriter. I loved the little flags in the cup cake decoration too, Hurray!!

The Wedding Photography

Dave met up with Ben and the boys while they were having a Full English Breakfast … take note future Grooms, you don’t want to start your day on an empty stomach! I joined Natalie and got to know her lovely bridesmaids as I photographed all the pretty details. Natalie made the most beautiful bride and we got some stunning, timeless portraits before setting off to the church. The service was held in a big room and we had free reign to photograph from any angle we wanted which meant we could get a wide variety of shots. I love the one of Ben’s face as he watches Natalie walk up the aisle towards him! Despite the weather forecast predicting rain it was dry for the group shots and STAYED dry for the couple shoot. Dave and I had spotted a lane close to the church with a few trees and some garages painted cool colours, and since getting there meant walking past a graffiti wall… well we couldn’t just walk by without taking a few shots there too! We often like to find a quiet spot for the couple shoot so the bride and groom can have a bit of time to relax and let the fact they have just got married sink in!!

Natalie started off the speeches with a great story about the first time she thought Ben was proposing …but it turned out the small box actually contained an ipod! We are beginning to see more brides giving a speech so if it’s something you’ve been considering … just do it! The first dance was pretty impressive as Natalie and Ben know some moves and then things went crazy as a flashmob of bridesmaids joined in and soon everyone was dancing to the beat of Tuxedo Swing Big Band. (Who I’d just like like to say were top notch and had me tapping my toes whilst capturing the general merriment) Once the dancing was well underway Dave took up his post at our fabulous photobooth and we got lots of fun photos including our top bride and groom pose this year! (You’ll need to get all the way to the bottom to see that one!)

MATERIALS

 Coloured felt scraps

Beads, buttons and sequins

Needles, thread, glue, scissors, pens

Templates (optional)

Note on Felt: Only put out colours you like, perhaps the ones you have chosen for your wedding – you might want to use a certain colour pallet e.g. cool blue and green tones or earthy natural ones. Acrylic felt tends to come in brighter colours and be slightly thicker and more sturdy. Wool Mix felt is often more subtle in colour but is also slightly thinner and more delicate. Look for bundles of felt squares or visit your local craft shop who may let you ‘pick and mix’ your colours.

page separator 445

HEN PARTY CRAFT ACTIVITY INSTRUCTIONS

1) Choose a theme e.g. flowers, hearts, butterflies, kites, balloons, shoes, circles or a mixture.

2) Give out pens and templates so your hens can draw a design on the back of the felt before cutting it out.

3) Encourage your hens to create a layered design with several colours of felt and decorate it with beads, buttons and sequins. Allow them to sew or stick – whichever they prefer.

4) Once everyone has finished sew or stick the final designs onto background fabric or card.

5) Put the final piece in a frame – you may find you need to take the glass out or use a deep tray frame to allow for the 3-D elements of the picture. Alternatively hang from a piece of dowel and add some ribbon or string to create a small banner.
