Julia and Anthony’s Wedding at Leicester City Rooms

Leicester stunning wedding photography

Julia and Anthony were so welcoming and friendly and it was a real joy to photograph their ceremony at St. Luke’s Church, Thurnby and wedding reception Leicester City Rooms. When I first arrived the house was full of mystery over who had planted the Bride and Groom loo paper in the upstairs bathroom…I still don’t know who did it!! Great idea though! I completely fell in love with Julia’s stunningly simple vintage look sequenced dress which was so perfect for her and looked great with her stylish short hair. Meanwhile Dave met up with the lads at the Ramada Hotel in Leicester which just happened to be five minutes away from our flat in Leicester’s cultural quarter, an area perfect for a few urban portraits before it was time for everyone to head to the pub!

When I got to the church Dave had a big smile on his face and I knew we had a helpful vicar which would mean we could get the photos we wanted. John Barrett Rector at St Luke’s Church Thurnby was amazing. Really friendly, great sermon and best of all he gave us lots of freedom to photograph the wedding in the way we wanted. I love ceremony photos and we work hard at getting beautiful shots of incredible moments without getting too close or being distracting.  Sometimes the restrictions we are given such as being told where to stand even in large churches make me want to cry with frustration…but no such issues here!

We decided to take the couple photos in the beautiful green lanes close to the Church which made a beautiful backdrop and where pleasantly surprised when a group of skateboarding hoodied teenagers came by and not only apologised for being in our shot but wished the happy couple congratulations, bless!

Leicester City Rooms made a very elegant venue for the reception. Full of ornate gilt framed mirrors, stunning chandeliers and a grand piano in the main room. Elki Palmer, the wedding co-ordinator is friendly and efficient and the evening ran very smoothly allowing everyone to simply enjoy themselves. Make sure you scroll down to the end of the blog for one of my favourite first dance shots of 2014! Enjoy!

SAM AND IAN GET WED AT SKETCHLEY GRANGE

When we ask our brides and grooms about what is important to them on their wedding day we often hear the reply…Having all our family and friends gathered around us to celebrate our big day. One thing that struck us from Sam and Ian’s wedding was the importance of Family and the close ties between them from young to the old.

The girls got ready at Sketchley Grange in a lovely room with gorgeous huge gilt framed mirror. Having a large mirror in your bridal preparation room is a great idea as they can be part of the creation of  some beautiful photos. If you are getting ready at home and don’t have a full length mirror its worth asking around your friends to see if anyone has a free standing one you can borrow. This kind of mirror is particularly helpful as it can be positioned where the best light is and good light is a photographers best friend! The large window at the end of the room provided the perfect light for some stunning bridal portraits once Sam had put on her dress, the finishing touch into her transformation into a very beautiful bride!

Meanwhile Dave was capturing some great breakfast action with the boys before accompanying them to the Cross Keys Pub, Burbage for some pre- wedding ceremony Dutch Courage! The boys waiting until they arrived at the Cross Keys before putting on their button holes in the pub garden. This is a good idea for two reasons, firstly, the nearer to the ceremony they go on the less likely they are to get damaged beforehand and also putting on button holes outside is great for a few photos. Be warned however that this seemingly easy task is not as simple as it looks and its worth watching a UTube video on how to do it!

After the ceremony at the beautiful St.Catherine’s Church we all headed off to Sketchley Grange for the reception. Dave and I had taken a quick look around early in the morning and had found a perfect tree lined little lane. So once Sam and Ian had grabbed a couple of celebratory glasses of champagne we headed off for a few relaxed wedding photos of the two of them.  I love this time in the day as it gives the couple a chance to focus on each other and let the fact that the wedding ceremony is over and they really are husband and wife really start to sink in!! After meeting Sam and Ian’s friends and family we knew that getting people onto the dance floor wasn’t going to be a problem and sure enough once the DJ started  there was plenty of action for Dave and I to capture on camera making a fabulous end to a wonderful wedding day!

Hannah & Tim | The Interview

ruthjoyphotography_wedding_gallery069

How did you two meet?

We first saw each other on a sunny day in a train at Wokingham station on the way to the Proms in the Park in Hyde Park September 2011. We followed each other across London to Hyde Park and found ourselves in the same big group of friends. We began seeing each other shortly afterwards.

Tell us about the proposal:

Tim took Hannah to Hawaii for Christmas holiday. On the morning of the 29th December, he took her on a submarine ride off the coast of the big island, then in the afternoon asked her to marry him on a beautiful secluded beach overlooking the Pacific Ocean. She said yes, then when they were about to go for a paddle, she stepped on a bee and Tim had to half-carry her back to the condo!

Tim, how did you know Hannah was the one for you?

For me it was the first date when we went out for coffee and we clicked. We were talking and everything just worked.

Hannah, how did you know Tim was the one for you?

I have no idea. I just woke up one day and could no longer imagine my life without him.

What moment was the highlight of the wedding for you?

Hannah: That’s a hard one as there are so many. I think it was during the signing of the registers. It was the first moment I really relaxed. My friends and bridesmaids were singing beautifully in the background and it was the moment it really began to feel real and was becoming official.

Tim: Definitely when Hannah finally showed up ;P

What did you enjoy most about your wedding?

Hannah: Easy. Seeing Tim and all my friends and family beaming at me all day.

Tim: I think it was getting to share the day with all my friends and family who are so dear to me.

What advice would you give other couples planning a wedding?

Hannah: Workout what time everything will take you in the morning when getting ready. Otherwise the time can run away with you and discovering too late that you are running very late can be very stressful.

Tim: Let your bride to be do it all ;P

Which is your favourite photograph from the day and what does it mean to you?

Hannah: Another hard one, there are so many lovely photos. I think it is the back and white one of the two of us standing at the altar facing away with our arms round each other.

Tim: The one of us sitting on the steps laughing.

What did you like best about having Ruth and Dave Photograph your Wedding?

Hannah: They were so relaxed and blended in so well with all the wedding guests. Ruth was particularly helpful in the morning. She was definitely a calming influence over me when I was getting more and more nervous and stressed about being late.

Tim: They were incredibly professional and like Hannah said it felt as if they were one of the invited guests.

Hannah and Tim’s Wedding at Bearwood College, Wokingham

“If there was one thing we did right in planning the wedding it was asking Ruth Joy Photography to take the pictures. They were brilliant and helped in making this the best day of our lives”  Tim & Hannah

When we first met Hannah and Tim at the White Lion Pub in Yateley we knew this was going to be a great wedding. They were both so open, friendly and excited about their big day and we soon realised that music, fun and laughter were going to be a big part of it!

On the morning of the wedding, Hannah’s five bridesmaids were singing and dancing as I arrived to photograph the bridal prep. This turned out to be a great way to keep the children entertained and soon everyone was joining in! Hannah had decided to go for silk flowers which are much easier to look after than real flowers and also make a lovely memento of the day to keep forever. Whilst I normally advise brides to get a professional make up artist to help them feel extra special on their wedding day Hannah turned out to be a dab hand with a makeup brush herself. I discovered how important the search for the perfect foundation is and Hannah’s complexion was so flawless yet natural that its made me want to learn more and I may even start watching U-tube videos!

The service was wonderful and the way Hannah and Tim looked at each other…well you’ll see for yourself. Getting a bit emotional when editing tends to happen a lot in my job, and these photos were just the sort to start me off! There was a great feeling of support from the whole congregation and at the end of the service Hannah’s Mum and a small group from their church came to the front to pray for the couple  which was a very special way to end the service.

The reception was held at the grand Bearwood College with its sweeping vista down to the lake and a field full of purple flowers which just happened to match the Wedding colours! Vintage tea sets and country garden inspired flower arrangements filled the tables as the guests settled down for afternoon tea, speeches and a lovely surprise for Hannah and Tim who were unexpectedly serenaded by the bridesmaids! Once the last cupcake had found a home everyone was ready to enjoy the garden games and a drink on the terrace.  As the light faded it was time for the first dance and it didn’t take long for their guests to join them on the dance floor making a great end to a magical day.

LEICESTER VINTAGE PHOTO SHOOT

When I first saw Deirdre she was dressed in the brightest multi-coloured leggings I had ever seen, a velvet coat and sparkly headband crowning pin curls of beautiful red hair – WOW, what a woman I thought, and as soon as I could I made my way over to talk to her. We found a shared love of dance, art and all things vintage and soon started planning how we could work together to create some images just for the pure love of it!

A few months ago I spotted a beautiful vintage sewing machine hidden in a church choir vestry and instantly thought of the Madame Yevonde photograph of the girl sewing. I showed it to Deirdre and she loved it so we decided to use as the inspiration for our shoot. Deirdre’s treasure chest of vintage clothes provided the perfect wardrobe and I finally found a purpose for all the silk flowers I had been collecting! Several windows complete with a huge reflector provided the bright lighting I wanted which made the colours sing out!

Deirdre is a joy to work with and we have a few more ideas up our sleeves so watch this space!

Julia & Anthony | The Interview

RuthJoyPhotography_Julia&Anthony_wedding_print -375

How did you two meet?

We worked in the same office, and we both happened to have our Christmas parties on the same night. Our groups met up at the Chinese Karaoke to continue the late night drinking! Anthony made his move then!! He wore me down until I agreed to go on a date with him!

Tell us about the proposal:

We had gone to Rome to celebrate Anthony’s birthday, and Anthony had suggested going to a recommended restaurant on his birthday. We took a taxi, and Anthony advised the restaurant was across the Ponte Milvio bridge. As we walked over the bridge, Anthony got down on one knee and proposed. He then produced an engraved Padlock with our initials and date on, which we joined to the other padlocks on the bridge, which I soon discovered was a famous romantic bridge for the Italians. After the proposal I asked Anthony where the restaurant was, only to discover there wasn’t one and none nearby!!

Julia, how did you know Anthony was the one for you?
Anthony always said he was there to enhance my life, and that he has. He is perfect for me, he’s patient, funny and loyal, but most of all makes me laugh.

Anthony, how did you know Julia, was the one for you?

As soon as Julia enters a room, she brightens it up, I love the inappropriate comments she makes when she is nervous, the fact that she cares so much for her friends and family, she is the only one who laughs at my jokes, she’s definitely my soul mate.

What moment was the highlight of the wedding for you?

Julia: honestly there were so many highlights! One highlight was seeing the queues for the photo booth, then seeing friends and family all showing their photos to each other.

Anthony: the whole day was amazing, I loved the confetti parade, the throwing of the bouquet from the balcony but my favourite was Julia announcing the winning table of the quiz.

What did you enjoy most about your wedding?

Julia: I loved looking around and seeing all the important people in my life all smiling and having a good time, knowing they were all there for me and Anthony. It was such a happy day, where it seemed everyone was laughing and smiling all day/night.

Anthony: the fact that everyone was smiling throughout the day and the light hearted nature of the service.

What advice would you give other couples planning a wedding?
Julia: it’s possible to organise a wedding in 4 months, it can be stressful and a lot if work, but no need for a long wait. Go for it.

Anthony: like I said in the speech, if you need a job doing get your other half to do it!!!

Which is your favourite photograph from the day and what does it mean to you?

Julia: my favourite photo is after the first dance, when I’m with Anthony and my friends, and I have my hands in the air. It really summed up the best day of my life….I’rud had a fabulous day, with all my friends and family there to share. However, there are too many photos to choose as every one seems brilliant.

Anthony: every time I look at the photos, I have a new favourite. My current favourite is seeing Julia with Jon the vicar doing a selfie just before the ceremony. Everyone looks so happy and relaxed. Looking back at it, it sets the tone of things that came that day.

What did you like best about having Ruth and Dave Photograph your Wedding?

Julia: I was nervous at first thinking Ruth would be coming to the house before the service as I don’t like having my photos taken but there was absolutely no need to be. She was very relaxed and put us all at ease. They both worked as a fabulous team and blended in so well that I actually forgot they were there. Everyone commented on how professional they were and all have been so impressed by the photos. I loved the fact that they had done some research beforehand and knew the perfect places to go and have the couple shots.

Anthony: The attention to detail from the initial meeting through to receiving the images was excellent, they gave us a clear idea of how the day would go and researched the church and venue in advance to make sure they could get great shots. Dave was great for the pre-ceremony photos with “the men”, he made us all relaxed and came up with some great ideas. Having Ruth and Dave there gave some really natural shots from different angles which were great.

Ruth was very subtle with her direction and made sure the photos were done in a timely manner enabling us to enjoy our day. For the majority of the day it was like they were never there. Whilst they were discretely taking natural shots of everyone, they were always on hand if we requested a photo. We couldn’t be happier with the photos and it was clear they love what they do and have a genuine talent. I would definitely recommend them for any events.

Several people have said to me that Ruth and Dave’s photos are the best wedding photographs they have ever seen.
